Tax Information

Property Tax Information:

1st Installments and full payments are due January 31st and are made payable to the Town of Phelps and mailed to: Town of Phelps, PO Box 91, Phelps, WI 54554

2nd Installments are due July 31st and are made payable to the Vilas County Treasurer and mailed to: Vilas County Treasurer, 330 Court Street, Eagle River, WI 54521

Please Note: If you request/require a receipt, please enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope with your payment.

Also: If you are sending a mortgage company check that is made payable to you (the property owner) AND the Town of Phelps, you must endorse the back of the check before sending it to the Town.

Lottery Tax Credit:

You may claim a lottery tax credit on your property tax, if on January 1st of the year in which the tax is levied, you were the owner of the property and used the property as your primary residence.

Please Note: If you feel you qualify and you do not see the lottery tax credit on your tax bill, Form LC100 is available online at https://revenue.wi.gov/pages/form/lottery-home.aspx or in the Town Clerk’s office.

Also: You may not claim this credit on business property, rental units, land, garages or other properties that are not your primary residence, or if you are a non-Wisconsin resident.

Dog License Tax:

The fee for a dog license is $5.00 per dog if spayed or neutered and $10.00 per dog if not spayed or not neutered. Please see the Application for fee of multiple dogs.

Please Note: Write a separate check for your dog license payment made payable to the Town of Phelps and mail to: Town of Phelps, PO Box 91, Phelps, WI 54554

Also: There is a $5.00 Late Fee for each dog if not registered by April 1st. Exceptions may apply i.e. puppies, new dogs, etc.

Room Tax:

Starting in 2025 the Town of Phelps will be implementing a 2.5% Room Tax on all short-term rentals for less than 30 consecutive days located in the Town of Phelps, pursuant to Wis. Stats. 66.0615.

Also: Starting in 2026 the Room Tax will be raised to 4.5%.
